New American Standard UL2263 Electric Vehicle Cable Standard Explanation

In May of this year, the latest standard for electric vehicles, UL2263, was released, and now it is mainly explained from the aspects of the new standard's model, voltage and temperature grades, conductor, insulation and sheath materials, wire size and test items.

1. Main models

UL2263 mainly has 6 models, namely EVJ EV; EVJE EVE; EVJT EVT

Model EVJ 300V (diameter of power supply: 18-12 AWG): The insulating materials used are mainly thermosetting materials (such as EP, CR, CSM, CPE, etc.)

Model EV 1000V (diameter of power supply line: 18-500 kcmil): the insulating materials used are mainly thermosetting materials (such as EP, CR, CSM, CPE, etc.)

Model EVJE 300V (power supply wire diameter: 18-12 AWG): The insulating material is mainly thermoplastic elastomer material (such as TPE, etc.)

Model EVE 1000V (diameter of power supply wire: 18-500 kcmil): The insulating material is mainly thermoplastic elastomer material (such as TPE, etc.)

Model EVJT 300V (diameter of power supply wire: 18-12 AWG): The insulating material is mainly thermoplastic material (such as PVC, etc.)

Model EVT 1000V (diameter of power supply wire: 18-500 kcmil): the insulating material is mainly thermoplastic material (such as PVC, etc.)

2. Voltage level

UL2263 voltage is up to 1000V AC or DC, mainly 300V, 600V, 1000V three voltage levels.

3. Temperature class

UL2263 has four temperature classes: 60 °C, 75 °C, 90 °C, 105 °C. Compared with the European standard EN50620 and the national standard GBT33594, the temperature resistance is up to 90 degrees, and the American UL2263 standard can reach 105 degrees.

4. Conductor material

The conductors are mainly soft copper or electroplated soft copper, and metal conductors such as copper alloys and aluminum alloys cannot be selected.

5. Insulation material and sheath material

The insulation and jacket are thermoset on EVJ and EV, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) on EVJE and EVE, and thermoplastic (PVC) on EVJT and EVT.

6. Wire diameter

The wire diameter of the main power supply wire: from 18 AWG (0.824mm²) to 500 kcmil (253mm²), signal transmission and control cables are not restricted by this.

7. Main test items

In order to qualify the products, the new standards mainly include the permittivity test, the stability factor test, the weather resistance test, the swelling and foaming test, and the chemical resistance test. This is also what we need to consider when designing and selecting products.
