DIAMONDBACK MISSION 1 27.5 2015

Five minutes on the Diamondback Mission 1 27.5 and you'll be hooked. Packing 160mm of point-and-shoot full suspension travel, this 27.5” wheeled all-mountain bike wants to tear into rough, steep terrain, looking for hits and drops that would surely have the amateurs searching for a B-line. Crushing it downhill is one thing, but the aspiring enduro racer needs to be able to climb efficiently too. Not a problem for the Mission 1! The Fox CTD equipped Knucklebox Migration suspension design reduces pedal induced motion without compromising small bump compliance, delivering you to the top efficiently and comfortably so you have more energy for another rip back down. The Mission takes advantage of the growing popularity of the 27.5" wheel size with this latest version, offering a ride that splits the difference of 29" and 26" wheels, giving you the best of both worlds. With 27.5", you retain the snappy handling of 26" wheels combined with the added obstacle clearance and acceleration typical of the 29er platform. Get on board, this ride is taking off and you don't want to be left behind!

For 2015, Diamondback is shaking up the suspension game with their newly improved Knucklebox platform. We are now in the era of KnuckleBox Migration. This means that Diamondback has refined the KnuckleBox platform to leverage even more performance from their already proven design. By migrating all the suspension components forward in the frame, travel is increased to 160mm and plenty of room is made for nimble, fast rolling 27.5” wheels. A newly designed, inverted KnuckleBox linkage and DB's proprietary single sided hardware round out this impressive new signature all-mountain, full suspension ride.

The KnuckleBox, or bell crank, is the core of Diamondback's single-pivot, four-bar suspension platform. Optimally placed pivots equate to a low leverage ratio, and ultimately to superior pedaling efficiency and small-bump compliance. This also allows the shock to work more efficiently and reduces pedal induced motion. It further reduces overall load on the system promoting improved shock and bearing life. Placing the KnuckleBox low within the frame lowers the bike’s center of gravity allowing it to track and corner better.

Wheel rate is the effective spring rate measured at the wheel, and it is a crucial aspect when considering suspension systems. A benefit of the KnuckleBox four-bar linkage is increased control over the wheel rate. Diamondback works closely with Fox, first obtaining the spring rate curves of their shocks so they can then optimize their wheel rates to be linear, to slightly progressive. The resulting ride yields superb small bump compliance, more perceived travel, and excellent bottom-out protection.

For the Mission 1 build, Diamondback chose to incorporate an array of sensible components that compliment and further enhance the impeccable design of the Mission 1 27.5. Suspension duties are handled beautifully by a plush pair from Fox Racing Shox. A Fox 32 Float CTD Air fork with 150mm travel soaks up everything from small bumps to daring drops and rock gardens. CTD technology allows you to fine tune your fork's performance to match your terrain, giving you everything from plush rebound on aggressive sections to stability and minimal bob when climbing. The rear Fox Float CTD Air keeps things tame in the rear, offering the same convenient CTD adjustment and plenty of travel to absorb anything that comes your way.

The Mission 1's drivetrain is a practical blend of tested workhorse components, resulting in a pedaling platform that shreds as hard as you plan to push it. A 10 speed Shimano SLX rear derailleur, Deore shifter, and HG50 11-36t speed cassette form the sturdy core of the Mission 1's drivetrain. This simple, but efficient drivetrain cuts the fluff where necessary leaving only a reliable, hard-wearing drivetrain intact, so you can get to work exploring and spend less time all glassy eyed staring at your bike in the garage. A perfect blend of performance and practicality, the Mission 1's drivetrain is the steady heartbeat of the bike. A Race Face Ride crankset delivers all the power you need to climb efficiently and hammer through speedy sections of the trail. Paired with a 30t narrow-wide chainring, this responsive pedaling platform offers excellent chain retention and a wide range of gearing that will take you up and over all sorts of terrain. Shimano M447 hydraulic disc brakes offer all of the stopping power needed to handle daring terrain and modulate speed through tricky descents. The Mission 1 rolls confidently on a bombproof set of alloy disc wheels paired with a set of the ever popular Kenda Nevegal 27.5 x 2.35" tires. Diamondback rounds out the cockpit of the Mission 1 with a full complement of DB branded components, ensuring that when you take a seat at mission control, everything is dialed!

INDEPENDENT REVIEW:

For the rider looking for a bike that's designed with downhill performance as the top priority, the Mission is a solid contender. This is basically a modern freeride bike, although that term seems to have become less popular in recent years. Maybe "aggressive all-mountain" would be the more contemporary phrasing, but in any case, the Mission is most at home on steep, technical trails, and wouldn't be out of place taking laps in a bike park. At the same time, it's light enough that it can be pedaled to the top without the need for shuttle assistance, opening up even more possibilities for riders searching out the most difficult, remote trails they can find. - Mike Kazimer, Pink Bike
